Montauk Babymoon

This past weekend, Charlie and I went on a babymoon. For those of you who do not know, a babymoon is supposed to be a couple’s last getaway alone together before the baby arrives. Shortly before our wedding, we started tossing around the idea of a weekend getaway in the fall, which was supposed to kick-start our plans to start a family. Needless to say, we didn’t need another vacation for this purpose, but we decided to steal away for some alone time anyway.

So we set our sights on Montauk. I had never been out to the Hamptons or Montauk before and since we now live in Long Island, we thought we’d take advantage of the quick drive. Unfortunately, it was raining for the majority of the weekend, but we still had a nice, relaxing time. We stayed at the cutest bed-and-breakfast, Sunrise Guest House, located off Old Montauk Highway just across the street from the beach, so we could hear the waves crashing as we went to sleep each night.  On Saturday we checked out Montauk Point Lighthouse, the harbor, and walked around downtown. Most importantly, we ate. Here were a few of the highlights:

The Coast: Charlie said he had the best bass ever here. I wouldn’t know as most of the local fish served in Montauk is on the no-no list for mammas-to-be due to high mercury (think swordfish, tuna, sea bass, and tilefish). So I settled for the Short Ribs, which came out in gargantuan Barney Rubble proportions – a bit fatty, but very tasty.

Gosman’s: Chowder (New England for Charlie; Manhattan for me) and lobster rolls – SO GOOD

Montauk Bake Shoppe: Black-and-White cookie - one of my faves - and decaf Barry’s Tea

East by Northeast: Crispy Peking Duck Tacos to start, followed by crispy pork with coconut risotto (AMAZING) and filet mignon, topped off with a crème brulee sampler for dessert

When we got up on Sunday morning, it was still raining, so we grabbed a quick breakfast and started to head to home-sweet-home. Of course, the sun came out about a half-hour into our ride, which was fine because we had a few stops to make along the way. First up was Wolffer Estatefor some merlot and cabernet franc (a bottle of which we will be storing for at least 6 months for mommy …). The we hit up the Milk Pail Farmstand in Water Mill for pumpkins, apple cider donuts, honey crisp apples and spaghetti squash. Finally, we made a quick detour to Briermere Farms in Riverhead for some pies – apple crisp and pumpkin. Yes, fall has definitely arrived in the Protano household.
