Coming out on Facebook

Last night, I came out on Facebook. Not in the traditional "coming out" sense but as in the yes-it's-official-I'm-pregnant sense.

I've been going back and forth on whether or not to do this since I found out about our little nugget in June. At first, it was way too early to tell anyone. Then in August, when we got the go ahead to spread the news from the rooftops, there were still a few people we wanted to tell in person, rather than having them find out through social media.

Then a few weeks ago, it started to get a little harder to avoid. I needed advice on baby gear. So I emailed all the moms I knew, via Facebook, a few questions. I figured this was totally acceptable since I didn't post it on my wall. Then I started getting comments from a couple people who thought it was still a secret since they never saw a FB post. Since when is it a requirement that we need to spread all our personal news via FB in order for it to be true? Oh yeah, since about 2008, which is when me and everyone else in my very wide circle got sucked into the social media giant.

Still, I was on the fence. Back when I got married (a whole 5 months ago), I was a stickler about photos of our wedding being posted on FB during the event, and before our professional photographer could post his pics. A stickler almost to the point of bridezilla.
I changed my privacy settings -- and Charlie's -- so no one could tag us and post to our timeline unless we approved the photos first. It pretty much worked, and thankfully my photographer posted a sneak peek of us the very same weekend, which was the first photo many people saw. I just wanted everything to be our news to share, not someone else's.

Now, as the pregnancy clock continues to tick, it's getting harder to avoid the obvious via FB. I thought about officially coming out when we found out the sex of the baby. But instead, I was inspired by a little NFL rivalry last night (I'm a Eagles fan and the husband is all for the Giants). Below is the photo I used and the caption read:

"Getting ready for the big game, and the Dawkins jersey still fits! Tonight, this baby is an Eagles fan. Shh...don't tell daddy."

In addition to all the amazing well wishes, there were also a few spirited jabs about the two teams going back-n-forth. It made the whole experience a little more fun, especially since the Eagles ended up winning the game!

Just don't ask which team our kid will be rooting for once he or she is actually born - that gets a post all it's own.
